So many controversial music videos lately. First Gaga, then Badu, now M.I.A. is all over the internet thanks to a confrontational video clip about the hair color that dare not speak its name. It’s a nine-minute long melee of death and destruction that accompanies “Born Free”, the lead single from her yet-to-be-titled new album due for release on June 29.
It’s also the latest pop culture vehicle to use “gingerism”, or society’s ongoing discomfort with its fair-haired, be-freckled members, as a metaphor for more Draconian forms of discrimination. Who could forget The Catherine Tate Show‘s “ginger refuge” episode or the gingerfication of Cartman on South Park, which later inspired a Facebook group entitled “National Kick A Ginger Day”. “Born Free”, on the other hand, is way more heavy-handed.
