Canadian rock duo Crown Lands has released their self-titled debut album—produced by six-time Grammy winner Dave Cobb—marks the arrival of a major new force.
The group’s name is indicative of their substantial ambitions; “Crown Land” is a territorial area belonging to the monarch—or, as singer Cody Bowles (whose own heritage is half Indigenous) puts it, “Crown Land is stolen land and we are reclaiming it.”
The album features everything from glammed-out rock to tracks that touch on more serious issues, such as End of the Road, a tribute to the missing and murdered Indigenous Womxn, Girls and Two-Spirits along Yellowhead Highway 16 in B.C., known as the Highway of Tears.
Says Bowles: “I identify as Two-Spirit and dream of a better world for the brilliant Indigenous womxn, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people who face adversity every day for their very existence.”
