An interesting feature of 2022 is that we start our brand new year with two retrogrades: we look back to begin again.
There is nothing astrologically significant about the 1st of January as a regular occurring event. There is no mark of the zodiac that defines this date, there is no post in the heavens that defines this as the place where a year starts.
Time, like astrology, is a human thing. Time, like astrology, is one way of describing our experience in this particular dimension. To think of human life outside of time is dizzying: remove the layer of time and we lose the passage of our lives, the organizing principle of our relationships, the reminders to eat and work and play and sleep and wake.

Astrology, like time, is a human thing. A system of describing our lives using myth and archetype to help us make sense of it all. A system that we have together decided means something—twelve noon means something, and the sun’s passage through the zodiac means something.
Time and astrology are both imperfect. Living on the border of a time zone shows us that, and the debate between tropical and sidereal astrology shows us that. But deciding to stick to something because we have decided it means something is as human a thing as anything.
There is nothing astrologically significant about the 1st of January, but there is everything significant in deciding to start over, over and over.

Taurus rising
Does it feel good to grow? Discomfort is transformation – yeah yeah – but it doesn’t have to hurt!
When you get a chance to put yourself out there to the world, when it feels truly like you out there, is that pleasurable? What does it feel like when your projects align with your path? What do you need to do in order to get there? What needs to be remembered?
January’s astrology is a chance to go over the things that have helped you grow the most, and reflect on how they have impacted your work. Look back over past work projects that are calling to you right now – perhaps there’s a detail you missed then that will put the whole puzzle of your growth together now.
Gemini rising
It does not always feel good to remember our entanglements. To think about trauma again. To remember ways we have hurt and been hurt. We can move past our intimacies but sometimes circumstances call them back to us and it’s like we’re right back there.
But to remember that our entanglements are what help us connect, that breaking out of constraints is growth – being reminded of this is the gift.
Queen Fucking Elizabeth said after September 11th, “grief is the price we pay for love”. I don’t know who on her staff wrote that and what was going on with Scorpio in their chart, but at 14 I remember really absorbing those words following that time. Grief is the price we pay for love – growth is the gain we make from grief. Chase your struggles with expansion.
Cancer rising
It is too powerful a cliché to describe the way that sometimes a scent, a sound, an encounter catches you off guard and brings you into the memory of a former loved one, but there is the odd time that a cliché is comforting for its endurance.
What former intimacy is coming back to you now? What collective nostalgia is gripping us and causing the tiktok trend where people lipsync dramatically to Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back To Me”?
January’s astrology invites any manner of old flams back to your memory. Virgo rising
You can be a little serious when it comes to fun, Virgo. Love can be a bit of a business transaction and play can feel like work, but don’t let that hide the ways you are a secret romantic.
And don’t let Virgo’s reputation hide the fact that you are also secretly adaptable. Secretly flexible to people’s needs, good in a crisis, organized in chaos.
This month remember your strong points. Think back to times you have gone against the Virgo stereotypes and proven to the world that your lot of the zodiac is as critical as every other part of the whole. Do this as a dedication to yourself to begin your year, because you are now and will always be your own #1.
Libra rising
