Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields is a brand ambassador for loneliness, with many of his most-loved melodies written during carved-out moments of solitude at gay dance clubs. He’s also a master of the antisocial lyric (‘Cause I always say, “I love you” / When I mean, “turn out the light” / And I say, “let’s run away” / When I just mean, “stay the night”), so what better place to find inspiration in this period of forced confinement?
Mear has been teasing their upcoming album with “live” quarantine performance videos recorded in two different apartments. Their latest is a gorgeous cover of Merritt’s gem “The Book of Love.”
Watch it below, and check out two more performances of Mear’s latest tracks after the jump.
