This B-52’s cover of the Beatles’ Paperback Writer (spied on the Lady Bunny Blog) sounds nothing like the band to the point where I had to look it up to see if it was actually them and not just some YouTube tagging mistake. Well, it’s from their most recent album Funplex so that explains that. However, I must tell you that despite the lacklusterness of the song, the video– which seems to be from something German, I guess– is pure gold!
(For a much more classic B-52’s cover, check out their even more genius take on Petula Clark’s already-genius Downtown.)
This looks like Pans People who were a dance troupe on the UK music show Top of the Pops. In the ’70s the show was live and Pans People would do dances for songs when the artists couldn’t attend. The choreographer was VERY literal in her interpretation of the songs. When there was a song about dogs they had dogs in the studio who did not do what they should…
Great video, but I think this cover song was recorded for a Buick commercial, not for the “Funplex” album. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s the case.
It’s sad that I know these things but still forget my zip code.
