The National Post (I know, how could I quote that fascist rag?) has reported that a man in the Houston congratulated one of his employees, a prosecutor, on winning a case against a drunk driver. That, in itself, is laudable. However, in the email the boss used the word “Canadian” when referring to black members of the jury:

“He overcame a subversively good defence by Matt Hennessey that had some Canadians on the jury feeling sorry for the defendant and forced them to do the right thing.”

I know Harper and Bush are behind this somehow.

  1. Yep, an ex of mine was a waiter in Detroit suburbs, and they used it the same way – it meant you have black people at a table, which meant poor tip, if any. He said they used Canadian because if you used the “n” you would get fired. Its been around for a long time.

  2. my boyfriend works at a restaurant. he introduced me to the whole reference of black people as canadian. it isn’t equivelant to the n word, but more so code for you have black people and a lousy tip is to come.
it is pretty common to do because i live in texas and visiting a friend in hawaii they make the same reference.

  3. Why Canadians? Because we’re less racist and more excepting? I think it’s time people figure out that skin color=nothing. This is 2008!!!

  4. Some white queen at a bar once said “I don’t like Canadians” while looking directly at me, but I am latino. His friends seemed as confused as I was. He just said “don’t you know code?” Maybe it can be used against all dark people.

  5. Canadian as code-word for black has been around since at least 1990. I worked at a restaurant in Pittsburgh and that was the word used by some employees there to refer to african-americans. It was the first time I had ever heard that and I never understood it b/c it wasn’t a replacement for the n* word, it was more just to say “which table is mine? Oh, the canadians?” I am surprised that this is still around and in use. Also, for some reason “Mango” was code for gay man, and this was before Chris Kattan’s SNL character.
