British singer Jessie Ware is giving us Prince-y ’80s vibes on “Tough Love,” the lead single from her forthcoming sophomore album. The song was produced by duo BenZel (a.k.a. “Tik Tok” producer Benny Blanco and Two Inch Punch) who last collaborated with Ware on a cover of Brownstone’s ’90s R&B classic “If You Love Me.”
Here is what she had to say about the single in a press release:
“I had just finished a run of shows in the States and went to New York to work with BenZel for a couple weeks, mainly as a different focus to touring. I didn’t have any expectations or pressures with what would come out of those two weeks, and think ‘Tough Love’ sums this up. It was me experimenting with my voice and having fun with it. It just felt right and kind of dictated the route of the next album, much like ‘Devotion’ did on my first album.”
BenZel served as executive producers on the album and Dave Okumu, Julio Bashmore, Kid Harpoon, Miguel, James Ford, Nineteen85 and Ed Sheeran are among Ware’s collaborators this time around, according to Pitchfork. “Tough Love” comes out in the UK on August 3. A North American release date has not yet been announced.
