Irish pop star Róisín Murphy has promised a “hectic” release schedule for 2014. We’re not sure if that means a long-awaited follow-up to her excellent 2007 solo album Overpowered or more one-off dance tracks with assorted European producers. (Or both?)
Either way, her first bit of new music is here: “Leviathan,” a collaboration with Freeform Five, a London-based group led by Anu Pillai. According to Billboard, the pair first collaborated four years ago after Pillai got wind that the ex-Moloko singer was playing his remix of her single “Movie Star.”
“Leviathan” has been a staple in her DJ sets since then but is only getting a release now. Here’s what Róisín had to say about the inspiration for the song in Billboard:
“Leviathan is mentioned in Daniel Robinson’s Great Ideas of Philosophy, an audio recording of several lectures,” Murphy explains. “In that context, I took the word to mean the overarching system of ideas, morals, rules of governance and the constraints and freedoms of any society at any giving time in history. The vast machine that is built with the sole intention of keeping us from anarchy and to halt the break down of said societies’ version of humanity… The word itself sounds vast and imposing. When I looked it up I found it actually means ‘whale’ or just ‘monster of the sea’ as mentioned in the Bible and Moby Dick. This song asks us as individuals and as a group to take ‘Leviathan’ in our own hands and make sure we play a part in the evolution of the system that governs us and the creation of the fabric of our existence.”
“Leviathan” is out February 10 via Eskimo Recordings. Listen to the single below.
