Dance music fans are waking up today to the sad news that soul and disco singer Loleatta Holloway died on Monday following a short illness. NME.com reports that her manager Ron Richardson confirmed the news last night. She was 64 years old.
In the 1970s, Holloway’s uplifting voice ascended the dance charts thanks to hits like “Dreaming”, “Hit and Run” and “Love Sensation” (above). A decade later her voice was all over the radio again when Euro group Black Box sampled “Love Sensation” for their smash hit “Ride On Time”, though they failed to credit Holloway. She later sued the band and won. Children of the ’80s and early ’90s should also remember Holloway’s vocals from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch’s inescapable 1991 hit “Good Vibrations” — her first and only number one on the Billboard Hot 100. More recently, Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys sampled her song “We’re Getting Stronger” for Whitney Houston’s “Million Dollar Bill”.
