A cavalcade of music stars has spoken out against the arrest of Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot in recent weeks but you gotta hand it to Peaches and Simonne Jones who’ve done some next level shit and written a song for the global free speech movement that has rallied around the band. Today, Peaches posted the Berlin-shot music video “Free Pussy Riot!” online along with links to sign the petition calling for the band’s release and donate to the cause.
Pussy Riot is an all-female performance collective that dresses in brightly-colored outfits and balaclavas. In March, members Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich were arrested and charged with ‘hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.’ A month earlier they had shot and uploaded a video to YouTube of five members performing a ‘punk prayer’ at the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour of the Russian Orthodox Church asking the Virgin Mary to chase Vladimir Putin away ahead of the Russian leader’s third presidential bid, which he won.
The Pussy Riot trial wrapped up last week but the verdict is expected to be handed down on August 17, which is also the Global Pussy Riot Day of protest. Go here to find out if there will be a Pussy Riot event in your city.
