Kylie Minogue has revealed in her new three-part Netflix documentary Kylie that she was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time in early 2021 more than 15 years after her first diagnosis in 2005.
Unlike the first time, which became international news and prompted a documented surge in mammography bookings, Minogue kept the 2021 diagnosis entirely private for five years. In the documentary she shares that early detection through routine check-ups was critical, and that she’s now well, but describes the experience as devastating — saying she felt like “a shell of a person” during treatment and at one point didn’t want to leave the house.
What makes the revelation striking is the timeline is that she was privately battling cancer while publicly experiencing the biggest career resurgence of her life. Her 2023 album Tension produced the Grammy-winning hit “Padam Padam,” and the track “Story” was written specifically about the 2021 diagnosis.
