Emily Estefan was the Red Table Talk, and spoke about the time she says mom Gloria told her not to come out to her elderly grandmother.
“I was like,’Hey, I’m in love with this girl’. “The fist thing you said was,’If you tell your grandma and she dies, her blood is on your hands’.”I wasn’t ready for that,so that’s where my hurt started.I’m never going to forget that”
Emily says she later understood her mother was coming from a place of love and affection. Gloria explains at the table:
“I was trying to protect both my ailing mother from any shock that may affect her health, and Emily from anything that could harm their relationship.”
Gloria regrets her decision. Gloria’s mother died in 2017 at 88 years old.
I’ve always hated Gloria Estefan’s music…and I mean really hated it I’m not just indifferent to it. But this…I get where she’s coming from and I don’t hold it against her. It’s not woke sure but she evolved with time. Give her a break!
I met Gloria Estefan when I was working at the Beaufort Heritage in Brisbane Australia, back in the 1990s. She was on tour at the time. She was so nice and sweet not like some celebrities are.
Also I can see where she is coming from most Latinos are concerned about coming out to their elderly parents I went through that with my husband whom is Colombian.
So reading that last part of Glorias about protecting them etc, yeah I can see where she was coming from. It was the same as my husbands view when he came out to his ailing father after we where married.
Fortunately his father was loving accepting and all he cared about was his happiness.
Regrettably he passed away three months later, however my husband was grateful that he had the opportunity of telling his parents and having his fathers acceptance and approval before he passed. My Mother In-Law has come around and now asks about me etc. Maybe one day I will travel down to Colombia and meet her.
