!! Music video round-up: Kylie, The Sound of Arrows, Sigur Ros, Mykki Blanco & Savages !!

Kylie Minogue is celebrating 25 years of hot pants-induced pop music by releasing the surprise single “Timebomb.” In the video, the diminutive Aussie pop star struts through the streets of London, obnoxiously f*cks with random people’s stuff and then gets mixed up with what appears to be a male model motorcycle gang. There’s also a lot of pelvic thrusting as well as some hair whipping. Four stars.

Super cute Swedish pop duo The Sound of Arrows stumble into some sort of interpretive dance cult from another dimension in the video for their latest single “Conquest.” There’s also some Sade-style horseback riding action, hovering crystals and a volcano eruption. Three stars.

“Eg Anda,” the first video in Icelandic band Sigur Ros‘ geo-blocked music video experiment to promote their Valtari album, is a PSA about saving a choking man, pregnant lady and baby. According to the group’s website, they’ve “given a dozen film makers the same modest budget and asked them to create whatever comes into their head when they listen to songs from the band’s forthcoming album. The idea is to bypass the usual artistic approval process and allow people utmost creative freedom. Among the filmmakers are Ramin Bahrani, Alma Har’el and John Cameron Mitchell.” Too bad they can’t bypass copyright laws. Zero stars.

New York MC and underground drag star Mykki Blanco might enjoy rapping over minimal beats but the music video for her song “Join My Militia” is maximally scary. It features a lot of dizzying camera work, dead fish, smoking, smeared make-up and various forms of tree bark molestation. Four stars.

Savages is a hot new post-punk group reminiscent of Siousxie and the Banshees that has barely played any gigs and has, like, one (amazing) song on SoundCloud. Let’s hope it’s not one of those situations where one good song leads to a massive wave of hype that in turn ensures we’ll be totally over it by the time they get around to releasing a debut LP. In the meantime, let’s enjoy this live footage of the band performing their song “City’s Full” while we still can. It features lots of attitude, distorted guitar riffs, sick bass lines and girlish yelping. Four stars.
