“When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration.
I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”
– Director Francis Ford Coppola, on Marvel movies and why they’re not cinema. Basically, he’s saying:
At least Marvel’s never killed an animal on-camera for a movie!
Well, he likes Into The Spidey-Verse, so the man has taste
So only they produce cinema…got it.
Well, billions of dollars in revenue might prove otherwise….. It’s entertainment!
I wholly agree with both – they are not cinema, they are entertainment. Period.
They are the same script. The same plot. The same villains. The same need to find a “bight, shiny object”.
But it’s entertainment. If you can turn your mind off to looking for deep-seated meaning, then will be just fine.
And getting to spend two+ hours in a dark movie house gazing at Chris Hemsworth or Chris Evans in all the their muscular glory on the big screen is not that bad of a benefit.
