Ellen Albertini Dow, the Rapping Granny from The Wedding Singer, has passed away at 101 years-old! Girlfriend was accomplished! Check out her CV below — she studied miming in Paris! Well, excuse US!
Born November 16, 1913 in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, Dow got a late start on her entertainment career, with her first on-screen credit listed as 1985âs âAmerican Drive-In.â Although she made guest appearances in a number of classic series throughout the â80s and â90s â including âThe Twilight Zone,â âMoonlighting,â âNewhart,â âMr. Belvedere,â âThe Golden Girlsâ and âFamily Mattersâ â her breakout role came in 1998âs âWedding Singer,â in which she gave a memorable performance of âRapperâs Delight.â A medley of Dowâs version of the song mixed with Sugarhill Gangâs original was included on the filmâs soundtrack album, which hit Billboardâs top 5 in 1998
Dowâs other big screen appearances included âSister Actâ and its sequel âBack in the Habit,â âPatch Adamsâ and âThe Wedding Crashers.â On television, Dow appeared in series as ecletic as âScrubs,â âHannah Montana,â âMy Name Is Earl,â âSeinfeld,â âSix Feet Underâ and âCold Case,â and was a regular on The WBâs shortlived comedy âMaybe Itâs Meâ in 2001. Dow continued working through 2013, making appearances on TV shows such as âShameless,â âNew Girlâ and âFamily Guyâ within the last five years.
Dow earned a B.A. and M.A. in theater from Cornell University, moving to New York after graduation to study acting with Michael Shurtleff and Uta Hagen, and dancing with Hanya Holm and Martha Graham. She was also said to have studied mime in Paris with Marcel Marceau and Jacques Lecoq. Before moving in front of the camera, she worked as an acting and dance coach for 30 years, teaching childrenâs and musical theatre at Pierce College and directing the collegeâs original production of âThe Fantasticksâ in the late â60s, which was remounted in Dowâs honor in the fall of 2014. In 1950 she married Eugene Dow, and they remained together until his death in 2004. The couple had no children, but are survived by numerous nieces and nephews, according to Pierce College.
RIP Ellen!

Rest in Peace, Ms. Dow. I loved your performance in this. I also got to see one of my favorite performers, Rita Gardner, of whom I’ve been a fan since I bought the OC Album of The Fantasticks in 1967. Thank you for a great performance.
I’ll always remember her as Lillian from Golden Girls.
