!! OMG, coming soon: The Knife’s experimental opera soundtrack !!

Swedish pop duo The Knife announced plans yesterday to release the soundtrack for the experimental opera Tomorrow In A Year. Inspired by the life of Charles Darwin and his book On the Origin of Species, the album will be available on February 9 in digital format and a month later in physical form. The music was commissioned by Danish theater company Hotel Pro Forma and composed in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock. We interviewed The Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson shortly after the opera’s September premiere in Copenhagen and here’s what she had to say about the process:

It’s a choreographer and us making music and there’s a light designer and a stenographer and costume designer and everybody was supposed to work without knowing what the other ones did… Sound-wise, we have been trying to work theoretically with the music because we’ve never done that before. Really following in a subject to work with the music in ways that sometimes we have made music of Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution in some specific species… He was a geologist in the beginning so it starts with… rocks. [laughs] And it ends up with a diversity of everything. It’s hard to say so much more about it.

The Knife have made the track “Colouring of Pigeons” available for free download to members of their mailing list. Preview the track below and if you like what you hear, sign up here to download it.
