The last time a pageant queen took to the stage for gay rights, she was Miss New York and she wasn’t real. Oh, you remember — the character in Miss Congeniality who declared her lesbian love onstage in front of the entire audience.
Come Jan. 15, a real Miss New York will make her case for LGBT equality, the first contestant to do so in the pageant’s 90-year history. Claire Buffie says she’s fighting for her Straight for Equality: Let’s Talk platform because her gay sister and gay friends are “people that I care about so much and that I never want to see treated as second-class citizens.” Meanwhile, who’s that tall cutie in the middle?
