Two decades after voguing went mainstream, New York and New Jersey’s underground ballroom scene has resurfaced on the music press’ radar. Authors of recent articles in Pitchfork and The Guardian have pontificated on the connection between queer rappers and ballroom DJs and the latter’s influence on dance music, but it seems like any significant cross-pollination between the three worlds is still in its early days.
Although “Ima Read” MCs Zebra Katz and Njena Reddd Foxxx and ballroom DJ MikeQ often find themselves featured in the same articles, they hadn’t shared the same bill until a pair of Canadian gigs last weekend.
