Sabrina Heard has been HIV-positive for 23 years. In a recent Huffington Post interview, she tells how, despite advances in treatment and care of HIV the stigma around the disease still remains strong. Her interview is completely blooming humbling as she describes the mistreatment by and ignorance of medical staff -back in the 80s- towards someone with HIV and how she overcame her “numbing” crack addiction to begin to deal with the reality of her diagnosis.
“In fact, it has been an awakening for me…I might not have paid that much attention to my health otherwise. There’s no telling what I might have [done] by now if I wasn’t HIV positive.”
