Italian disco diva Hard Ton is hard to miss for a few reasons. Firstly, the cover of his Gigolo Records debut EP Selfish is an homage to Grace Jones’ Island Life arabesque album art. Every time I look at it I’m… speechless. Secondly, he’s got the voice of Sylvester and the body of Martha Wash. Thirdly, his Chicago-house sound is spot on and really, really gay.
What’s not immediately apparent (but somehow makes sense) is that he’s spent the past 15 years singing in metal bands and one of his musical heroes is Judas Priest front man Rob Halford. Also, he recorded the three tracks on Selfish using strictly analogue and vintage gear. To sample what Hard Ton has to offer, check the video for “Earthquake” below.
Good sound, but I doubt there’s anything hard on Hard Ton’s body. The nudist drummer is sweet.
