!! OMG, why not wear it? Collina Strada’s ‘Got Milkweed’ slip dress + other delights from New York Fashion Week !!

Collina Strada SS23 Got Milkweed

A look from the Collina Strada Spring/Summer 2023 Collection

If, like myself, you’ve been yearning for some runway magic to reset your imagination, the recent shows at New York Fashion Week haven’t disappointed.

When Hari Nef opened the Collina Strada catwalk presentation, her silk-and-lace slip dress worn over retro plaid trousers immediately gave ‘90s downtown cool girl vibes; but the look also came with messaging on a decidedly hot topic:

The rhinestone “Got Milkweed?” motto emblazoned on Nef’s garment wasn’t simply a nod to the iconic Big Milk ad campaign popularized during that decade. It also highlighted a humble plant so integral to our existence on earth; as the only flora that acts as a host to Monarch butterfly caterpillars, milkweed is essential to ecological balance.

And because we love a theme, Collina Strada’s creative director Hillary Taymour chose to hold the show at the Naval Cemetery Landscape, which is home to a native plant meadow and pollinator habitat.

But winged wonders weren’t the only beauties to behold during the show. See the rest of our roundup after the jump!

Embellished denim and dainty double-layered tops took full command of our attention. Note the nipple ring details – another ‘90s gesture, now with practical applications!

Looks from the Eckhaus Latta Spring/Summer 2023 Collection

Indeed, an insouciant mood pervaded the Spring 2023 scene – exposed skin and striking silhouettes were front and centre. But so were takes on classique warm-weather attire, like the zip-away shorts at Echkaus Latta.

Paired with a paint-splotched knit top and equally artistic lug sole boots, one could practically hear model Ryan Park shouting for a $20 bottle of water at a music festival wearing these intrepid threads.

Over at Luar, designer Raúl Lopez reworked wardrobe staples like the power suit, amplifying shoulders for a silhouette that says, “Bag secured”.

Speaking of bags, you might know the Luar name thanks to its coveted line of geometric-shaped accessories, which has found fans in athlete Aerial Powers and Charli XCX.

With this new collection, Lopez introduced a new crop of carry-alls that emphasized the exaggerated mood of the aesthetic.

It’s not an exaggeration, though, to say that Lil Nas X’s debut runway appearance as the Coach show’s closer was one of the most welcomely unexpected moments of the NYFW calendar.

Serving distressed leather daddy rolling through to brunch at an American Girl store (the rugged vest-and-shorts combo was worn with a glittery gold bag and purple jelly sandals!), the musician marked his introduction as the brand’s newest ambassador.

Does this mean we’ll see Coach’s Stuart Vevers designing cheeky chaps in collections to come? If the custom garb the rapper has been wearing from the label during his recent tour is any indication, the future does look bright.

OMG, why not wear it? is our column for fashion lovers who are up for anything. It is an inspiration point, a place for dreaming, and a discussion of beauty, weirdness, and thought-provoking design moments as forms of connection. Written by Odessa Paloma Parker (@odessapaloma)
