!! OMG, one photographer, 12 Years, and 750 Soviet bus stops !!

Canadian photographer Herwig spent over a decade travelling more than 50,000 kilometres across the former Soviet Union, documenting nearly 750 bus stops in countries ranging from Ukraine and Georgia to Kazakhstan and the Baltics.

What he found challenges the stereotype of Soviet uniformity — these humble roadside shelters turned out to be surprising canvases for local creativity, featuring bold forms, playful details, and regional references that feel almost defiant in their individuality.

Collected in his book Soviet Bus Stops, the project is a fascinating reminder that even within the most rigid systems, people found ways to leave their mark on the landscape, one weird and wonderful bus shelter at a time. Check out a gallery of some of his images after the jump!

  1. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel for blog content.

  2. They must have been so cool when they were brand new: the colors look like they were amazing.

  3. I love these! St. George slaying the dragon! Of course!
