Toronto-based artist Zack Rosen is exhibiting a new series of paintings titled “Take Me Back To Happiness” (inspired by the Crooked Man song) this month in Toronto.
Zack’s paintings center around Hanlan’s Point, a secluded beach situated on the Toronto Island. The beach has been designated “clothing optional” since 1999, but has been a beloved queer meeting spot since the 1950s.
Inspired by Keith Haring, David Hockney, and other gay visionaries, Zack’s paintings capture the natural beauty, freedom of nudity, and sexual expression that is common-place on a hot summer day at Hanlan’s Point.
With a few of the smaller pieces drawn live at the beach, expect a healthy balance between gorgeous beachscapes and male nudes!

Although safe for now, the beach has been contested by the interests of private developers—these works showcase a moment in time in Toronto’s queer landscape that may not last forever, but will certainly be enjoyed this summer!
“Take Me Back To Happiness” is on at Northern Contemporary Gallery (420 Roncesvalles Avenue) in Toronto from March 8th-14th, with an opening on March 10.
