They are unique which I prefer over a lot of things. I am astonished that there seem to be no rules for builders. You would never get through with many of those things in Switzerland.
Ugly is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. I would call them quirky, unique, maybe even funky.
Some of those houses I thought were quite nice. The one with the barrel tile, and the ivy covered
