Ryan McGinley took his camera into the Russian & Turkish Baths on East 10th Street for The Cut’s Men’s Style Issue, and the cast is stacked: Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, playwright Jeremy O. Harris, Troye Sivan (fresh off his move to New York), novelist Marlon James, Isaac Cole Powell, Jack Cameron Kay, and painter Francesco Clemente (who used to sweat it out there with Basquiat in the ’80s.)
Stylist Miyako Bellizzi had them wear “some fashion. But hardly any.” Of course, in practice that means Dior shorts, a Hermès towel, and a whole lot of balmy skin.
The Baths have been open since 1892, and two families still split the place week by week. There are Boris weeks and David weeks, and a pass bought for one won’t get you in on the other. Each side even has its own Instagram account. A day pass is $60 now, and Sundays and Thursdays are still men-only, which have turned into gay meetups.
