Best known for his high-flying hit “Top Gun,” director Tony Scott committed suicide Sunday afternoon by jumping from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California. Witnesses saw the 68-year-old scale the 10-foot fence at about 12:30 p.m. and leap without hesitation. Los Angeles police pulled his body from the water a few hours later. A note with contact information was found inside Scott’s black Toyota Prius parked on the bridge, and a suicide note was later located at his office. The director leaves behind brother and fellow filmmaker Ridley Scott and wife Donna Wilson, with whom he had twin sons.

I understand he was sick with inoperable brain cancer. I’m glad he achieved what he sought to do: end his suffering while he was still able.
