With appearances by the Spice Girls, Annie Lennox, George Michael and Pet Shop Boys, yesterday’s closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics was probably the gayest television extravaganza we’re likely to see on basic cable all year. To top it off, the ceremony’s musical trip through recent British pop music history included a massive dance routine to a re-recorded ‘remix’ of Kate Bush‘s seminal ’80s hit “Running Up That Hill” (that, naturally, was edited out of the U.S. broadcast).
The 2012 version of “Running” sounds more like a subtle re-working than a remix and is available via Kate Bush’s website. Here is what she had to say about the new version: “I hope you all enjoyed the remix of ‘Running Up That Hill’ this evening at the Olympics Closing Ceremony. They certainly put on a brilliant show.”
Have a listen to it via Disco Naïveté.
You should all track down the DJ Magnet mash-up of Placebo’s cover of “Running Up That Hill” with Pet Shop Boys’ “Love Comes Quickly,” plus sampling Kate’s original version too. It is sublime and wonderful.
